Okay, so I don't really shuffle like the hamsters do in this commercial. In fact, on a scale of 1-10, I would rate my dancing skills at a (-)100. Yep, I'm in the negatives when it comes to coordinating my limbs in a rhythmical way. The best I can do is a head/shoulder bob every now-and-then, and that's my A-Game when it comes to dancing.
So with my confession about my lack of true shuffling skills, you've probably guessed that this post has something to do with my house, right?
Here's what I've been shuffling lately...
We don't have a lot of cabinet or drawer space available in our kitchen, so our cooking utensils have found a home in this red crock we received as a wedding gift over six years ago (holy smokes, I still can't believe it's been 6 years!).
As you can see, all of the cooking utensils were jammed tightly together into this one little crock, which made it difficult to find things when we needed them. Thankfully, a woman by the name of, Martha Stewart, was born to give us all wonderful organization ideas like these ones...
I've been wanting to use these ideas for the longest time, but just never got around to it. Then I found two white ceramic vases in the Ikea "As Is" section for $.99 each, and I used them to sort out the metallic utensils and basting brushes. For the wooden spoons I used a glass cookie jar...and here's what everything looked like after the simple act of sorting...
It looked a lot better, and it certainly was more functional, but I still felt like the grouping wasn't complete. I needed a tray to get the unified look I was wanting.
A few days ago you saw me post about some of the loot I found at the Savers President's Day 50% off sale, but there were many additional items that came home with me that day...one of them being this $2.00 tray that works perfectly for what I need! Woo hoo!!
With just the knife-set and cooking utensils, the grouping was a little flat...so I put some sugar into the serving canisters you see in the photo. This serving set was another item that I found at Savers from a previous shopping spree (sorry, I can't remember how much I paid for it), and I'm pretty sure that it's meant to hold dressings and oils, but I'm finding it pretty handy to have some sugar easily accessible to sprinkle on my cereal. Plus, that extra pop of white just finishes everything off, don't you think??
Another item I brought home for 50% off was this crystal bowl...
Don't you just love 50% off day?! Instead of paying $7.00, I paid $3.50!
I loved the pattern that is etched into the crystal, but honestly, I don't usually go for crystal things. My original plan was to spray-paint it white, but after getting it home it kinda grew on me. If I give it a coat of paint it will look more like a ceramic bowl, and there's no turning back once it's painted. For now, I'm leaving it as is, but what do you think?
To free up some space in one of my cabinets, I decided to use this crystal bowl to hold some of our most-used cooking sprays, oils, and spices. It's been very convenient to have everything right there on the counter...and I feel like grouping everything together in the dish still keeps everything looking clean and orderly.
As for all of the plastic cooking utensils...they're still in our 6-year-old crock...and the next step is to transform the tray and the crock so that they both match.
The crock has been so handy, so I don't want to get rid of it--but it's definitely time for a face-lift. I'm planning to paint the crock and the tray with white & gray stripes. Horizontal stripes for the crock, and vertical stripes on the inner portion of the tray only. But, for the crock I am also going to be making a fabric liner because I don't want any of our cooking utensils to touch where I've painted...since (if you didn't know), spray paint happens to be toxic! Ha!
Has anyone else been shuffling lately? Both dancing and decorating apply here! How do you guys keep your kitchen organized? I'm on the hunt for more great ideas!
